Its almost upon us, the 7th consecutive Vermont Open Grappling Championships! We have seen our event grow  in the numbers and skill level of competitors, the number of spectators, and the number of weight and skill classes. And yet, the Vermont Open is still a beginner-friendly, and smooth-running tournament. Many of you have participated in several of our events, some will be competing with us for the 7th time!

Murilo Bustamante is one of the few grapplers who can be called a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu master. In addition to being a black belt, the highly decorated Bustamante has won numerous world titles in the art of Jiu Jitsu.

Though Bustamante possesses incredible submission skills, he compliments them with a solid boxing background, making him a difficult match-up.

His impressive resume includes wins over Jerry Bohlander of the Lion's Den, Dave Menne (which won him the UFC middleweight championship) and Matt Lindland (at a time when Lindland was undefeated). Murilo has an impressive record and more than 30 Professional fights!

 

Murilo's grappling accomplishments include Championships at the World Class level, as well as appearances at the ADCC World Submission Wrestling Championships. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, he has won The Mundials World Championships in 1999 and has won the Brazilian National Championship 4 times.

He was the reigning and undisputed UFC middleweight champion after defeating Dave Menne at UFC 35. He made one title defense, defeating Matt Lindland, before leaving the UFC due to financial reasons and signing with PRIDE in 2003.

He was a finalist of the PRIDE Welterweight Tournament 2005 on December 31. After two impressive victories via an armbar and a TKO, defeating Ikuhisa Minowa and Masanori Suda. In the finals Busta dropped an extremely close split decision to to the Pride champion.

Kickboxing Classes with champion Del Greer starting October 2009

Del Greer will teach Kickboxing and Bando Sparring at the Vermont Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Self Defense Academy every Thursday from 8 - 9 PM starting on October 8th. Del is 3-times American Kickboxing Champion, Hook-n-Shoot MMA Challenge winner, Arnold Schwazenegger 2-times Heavy-weight and Absolute Champion among other tournaments and awards.

Del will teach basics of stance, footwork, angling, body position. Good forms for the basic punches of jab, straight punch, hook, backfist, and uppercut. She will also teach defense strategies for blocking, angling, side stepping, and the bob & weave.

Her teaching philosophy is of team unity, encouragement, and development of every student (from beginners with no experience) regardless of their skill and ability, by assisting them in achieving their goals and accomplishing a new ability.

WCF World Championship Fighting - September 26th - Boston, MA

Noah Weisman (Vermont BJJ Revolution Team) had a great performance at the WCF on Saturday, September 26th, 2009. Official time was 3:52 of round one! It was Noah's second professional match! After punishing his opponent, with punches and knees; Noah won by rear naked choke submission!!
